The practical answer
A laboratory result describes the portion tested. To use it for a received lot, establish a sampling plan that accounts for the shipment, containers, material behavior and decision being made. Keep the sample identity and handling history connected to the lot rather than relying on an untraceable supplier jar.
Define the population and the decision
A development sample answers whether a particular sample looks promising. It does not automatically represent the commercial lot delivered months later. Before ordering tests, identify the lot or shipment population, the attribute being assessed and the consequence of missing a nonuniform or contaminated portion.
US dietary-supplement requirements address collection of representative samples and laboratory sampling controls. Those provisions establish the need for a defensible plan; they do not supply a universal container count for every ingredient shipment. [1] [2] Your quality team should select and justify the approach for the material and operation.
Build the plan around observable differences
Combining increments can be useful for some average-composition questions, but it can also obscure differences among containers. Decide whether individual-container information is important before compositing. A later investigation cannot reconstruct that information from a pooled sample if the original increments were not retained.
- Record manufacturer lot numbers, receiving identifiers, container count and whether a shipment contains more than one lot.
- Consider container location, packaging condition and potential differences caused by handling or powder segregation.
- Specify sampling equipment, clean handling, sample quantities, labeling and how samples are protected after collection.
- Define whether individual increments remain separate or are combined, and which decisions each resulting sample can support.
- Document who collects, transfers and receives the samples, including any deviation from the plan.
Keep these records connected
When a supplier sample and an incoming result disagree, compare identity, sampling history, moisture basis and analytical methods before concluding that production changed. Keep an unopened or appropriately retained comparison portion when your quality procedure calls for it. Repeatedly taking new samples until a result passes is not a substitute for investigating the original discrepancy.

Use trends without overinterpreting them
Track selected lot attributes alongside method versions, dates and storage history. A shift in bulk density or water may help explain a filling change even when elemental magnesium remains within specification. Distinguish a genuine trend from a change in the sampling or test procedure.
No sampling scheme proves every particle or container is identical. The objective is a justified level of confidence for a defined decision, with an escalation path when observations fall outside expectations. Record the basis for the plan and review it when the supplier, manufacturing process, package or shipment pattern changes.
