Elemental magnesium versus ingredient weight: a formulation calculation

Calculate magnesium glycinate input from the measured elemental magnesium assay, with a worked example and checks for units and assay basis.

The practical answer

Ingredient weight and elemental magnesium are different quantities. Divide the formulation target for elemental magnesium by the ingredient’s usable magnesium fraction. Use the qualified lot assay on the correct moisture basis; a product name or theoretical molecular formula is not a substitute for that value.

Start with the right quantity

For a magnesium-containing ingredient, most of the weighed material is not magnesium itself. A specification can state an elemental magnesium percentage while a purchase order records kilograms of ingredient. Keeping these quantities in separate fields prevents an apparently plausible formula from being wrong by several times. The US supplement-labeling rules distinguish the nutrient amount from its source; final label decisions belong in your regulatory review. [1]

Write the target as milligrams of elemental magnesium per defined serving, then record the supplier’s assay, reporting basis and method. Check whether the serving contains one unit or several. Include magnesium from every other ingredient before calculating the amount that this source must supply.

Work through a transparent example

Suppose a development brief allocates 100 mg of elemental magnesium to this ingredient and the qualified material contains 12.0% magnesium as received. The arithmetic is 100 ÷ 0.120 = 833.3 mg of ingredient. This is an illustrative mass calculation, not a recommended human intake, a MagneINNO specification or a finished-product label claim.

At 10,000 servings, that example requires 8.333 kg before any justified manufacturing adjustment. Do not enter 12 instead of 0.12 in the formula. Conversely, a 1,000 mg input at the same assay contributes 120 mg of elemental magnesium. Checking both directions is a simple way to catch a spreadsheet mistake.

Resolve these questions before issuing a batch sheet

  • Is the assay an actual lot result, a minimum specification or a typical marketing value? Record which one the calculation uses.
  • Is the value as received, dried or anhydrous? Resolve water corrections once, rather than applying them twice.
  • Does the finished blend contain other mineral salts, premixes or carriers that contribute magnesium?
  • Who approves any overage, expected process loss, rounding rule and final release test? Do not add a blanket percentage simply because it is common in another formula.

What the calculation cannot establish

This calculation addresses mass balance only. It does not establish chemical identity, chelation, bioavailability, safety, suitability for a claim or stability through shelf life. A material can have the expected elemental assay while differing in other composition or performance attributes.

Keep the calculation with the specification revision and lot reference used to create it. A later assay-basis change can otherwise make an unchanged spreadsheet produce the wrong input. The finished-product manufacturer still needs component and product specifications appropriate to its process. [2]
